Rick Martens

Dr. Rick Martens is a retired educator who is committed to improving the lives of children and their families in Orange County.

Born in Seattle, Washington, Dr. Martens moved to Anaheim California with his family in 1972.  He began his teaching in 1983, after graduating from California State University Fullerton with a B.A. in Psychology and receiving his teaching credential from Chapman University in Orange. He taught math, psychology, social studies, and driver’s education in Anaheim and Downey for ten years before becoming Dean of Activities at Esperanza High School in 1993. In 2002, he was named Principal of Savanna High School and raised its academic performance index by 45 points over three years.

After he completed his Doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of Southern California in 2004, Dr. Martens was placed in charge of alternative education in the Anaheim Union High School District. He increased graduation rates, expanded access to alternative programs, and streamlined alternative education in the district. In 2010, he was promoted to Director of Student Services, where he oversaw student discipline, student transfers, and all student intervention programs in Anaheim and its surrounding cities.

Dr. Martens retired in 2015, but remains active in his community. He is a board member for the Anaheim YMCA and part of their executive committee, as well as a founding member of the Network Anaheim Steering Committee. He performs in local community theater productions.

Members
